Amy Leah Nelson Smith is a production designer and a co-owner of Bellpond Films, a production company based in Utah. She moonlights as a wardrobe stylist and costume designer for commercials and music videos.
Whether in art or costuming, on a grand or miniature scale, she fixates on details that communicate volumes. Drawing inspiration from her travels abroad, Amy loves to incorporate bold color and patterns, timeless shapes, and abundant layers.
Her formative years were spent in Austin, deep in the heart of Texas, where she learned an appreciation for diversity, love for unique characters, and a thirst for adventure. Amy eventually graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s in Studio Art. Shortly before graduation, she got yanked onto her fiancé’s senior thesis film, Mr. Bellpond, after his production designer jumped ship three days before filming. This was no simple task as the project was a design-heavy comedy set in the 1800s, let alone being Amy's first foray into the inner workings of the film world. Upon completion, Mr. Bellpond went on to win several awards, including two at the Emmy Foundation’s College Television Awards (Best Comedy/Best Director), and a regional Student Oscar.
Outside of film, Amy is known for her penchant for cats, cactus and the all-around absurd. She’s the wife of a director and the mother of two rambunctious, abstract intellects, ages two and four. She also houses two felines; one is a saint and the other… well, she’s the most oblivious dust ruffle of a creature that has ever graced planet Earth, who also has her own film credits.
